With the rise of digital arts in the current era, the pen is no longer the only tool that is mightier than the sword. In the dynamic world of campus journalism and press conference contests, digital art has become the new frontier, blending technology and creativity to redefine how stories are told and ideas are brought to life.
In the past, a school-based press conference was held in Colegio de San Gabriel Arcangel, and one of the categories that were being contested was digital artsโan art that uses digital technology or electronic devices to create it. It can include a wide range of media, which in this case is digital painting and illustration.ย
Digital art has always been a part of press conferences or even journalism as a whole in the form of photojournalism. With a small camera and a quick shutter, photojournalists create a story within a snap of a photo. Similar to capturing a moment, digital arts create valuable stories using graphic software and stylus pens. By introducing digital arts to local-based scenarios like school-based press conferences, the school can foster the creativity and talent of the students by providing a platform to express themselves through a modern medium.
Having digital arts in press conferences will not only recognize but also celebrate the diversity of artistic expressions in the modern era. Providing a platform that possesses skills in digital mediums to show their talent, ensuring that the contest reflects the diverse nature of art today. Additionally, the inclusion of digital arts will also broaden the appeal of campus journalism. Certain students who do not consider themselves traditional artists can contribute through their expertise in graphic design, illustration, or digital painting that empowers the publication perspective.ย
ย On our campus publication page, The Intervenor, it is often noticed that digitized arts gain more attraction than the ones that are traditionally created. We can also look at this case through what contents are incorporated with the arts themselves. Most of the digital arts that are posted on the page are accompanied by a feature article or literary article. These articles are mostly related to the lifestyle and everyday lives of the audiences; which makes the content relatable for students and the like. Furthermore, traditional arts mostly coincide with editorial and opinion articles that often contain heavier topics, such as political issues and current eventsโsomething that a normal student will surely not pay much attention to because it lacks relatability.
ย In this sense, digital arts donโt aim to replace the traditional form of art in journalism. However, they aspire to work alongside each other. Feature and Literary writers can keep on incorporating digital arts into the articles that they create while Editorial writers can still use traditional caricatures that show political symbolisms.
ย Although digital arts provide a proper platform for tech-savvy artists of todayโthey are often criticized for lacking tangibility which also defers the artโs authenticity. Especially with the rise of โAI artsโ that slowly dominates digital art which makes it hard to distinguish if a certain art is created by an AI prompt or authentically created by an artist, accompanied by the fact that digital art is not a tactile material, unlike traditional arts that carry physical presence, textures, and imperfections that reflect the artistโs hand.ย
However, while digital art lacks tangibility, its flexibility makes it more versatile and relatable to audiences. The ability to create, share, and edit without boundaries enables wider access to art creation and appreciation. Furthermore, digital arts are not boxed by the limitations of physical mediums. In this sense, digital art expands what art can be rather than diminishing its value.
Generally, the introduction of digital arts in the world of press conferences will amplify the cause of the event. By introducing new categories that will cater to new forms of journalismโwe are branching out ideas and defying the tradition of what journalism could be.
To ride the wave of the new generation, we have to use a method that will encourage them to join the journey. With the help of digital arts as part of press conferences, we can persuade these aspiring artists to join campus journalism, where they can utilize their full potential.
